  • MARKET WATCH: Global stocks rise on Fed's announcement

    SAO PAULO, 1/27/12 - Except for Wall Street, worldwide stocks closed Wednesday's session in the black on optimism prompted by the US' Federal Reserve's (Fed) statement that the US economy has seen moderate growth. The institution also said that the Federal Fund rate will be kept low at least until 2014. In Europe the highlight was Italy's bond auction, which raised ?5 billion (US$6.57 billion) from papers maturing in 2014 at low interests.

    As a result the FTSE-100 in London closed up 1.02%, at 5,781 points; the CAC-40 in Paris gained 1.14%, to 3,350 points; and the DAX 30 in Frankfurt rose 1.57%, to 6,522 points.

    In Wall Street the markets opened in positive territory, but reversed the uptrend and closed in the red. The Dow Jones closed down 0.18%, at 12,734 points; the S&P 500 fell 0.57%, to 1,318 points; and Nasdaq fell 0.46%, to 2,805 points.

    In Argentina the Merval Index of the Buenos Aires stock exchange closed down 0.21%.

    In Brazil the Ibovespa Index of the BOVESPA stock exchange tracked European bourses and closed up 0.75%, at 62,953 points, on a trading volume of R$7.891 billion.

    At the fixed income market of the BM&F exchange the majority of interest rate futures fell against the previous clse. The January 1, 2013 maturity - the most liquid - projected 9.64%.

    On the foreign exchange market the US dollar fell against the Brazilian real, to R$1.742.
