Bill Akmentins, CFA

Director of Research

With more than fifteen years of experience, Bill is a senior investment professional with significant experience managing complex, multi-asset class portfolios for both individuals and institutions. He brings great skill to Cary Street Partners in asset allocation and manager selection in all major asset classes including; hedge funds, traditional equities, fixed income, real assets and private equity. As the Director of Research at Cary Street Partners, Bill oversees manager research for all asset classes. He and the Research team collaborate with Chief Investment Strategist Marshall Acuff and his Investment Strategy group, which is responsible for establishing investment strategy and making asset allocation recommendations. The combination of these efforts results in customized and packaged investment solutions for our investors.

Prior to joining Cary Street Partners, Bill was the Director of Public Investments at Southern Methodist University (SMU) where he managed the university’s $1.2 billion endowment. Before his 6-year tenure at SMU, Bill was a Senior Portfolio Manager at U.S. Trust Company, N.A., in Charlotte, North Carolina. At U.S. Trust he managed $300 million in client portfolios for foundations, endowments, and retirement plans. He also created customized investment strategies for high net worth individuals and families.
Bill began his professional investment career as an Investment Research Analyst for The Duke Endowment, one of the nation's largest 501(c)(3) private foundations, with assets of $2.7 billion.

Bill earned his Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has a Masters of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina, Kenan-Flagler School of Business. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Bill, who grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, is married to Sarah, a native of Recife, Brazil. They have 2 children, Julia and Rafael, and live in a suburb of Richmond, Virginia.
